Will Geof Ever Be A Doctor?

Chapter 5

Grace and Alice lost track of time; having not seen each for some time they talked on, a feeling of closeness bound them to share all they could of each other. Geof had gone to his room and was deep in a book. His uncle had been a doctor and Geof felt very near to him as he sat quietly, taking in the knowledge the book could give him.

Suddenly it seemed to hit the ears of the two ladies that Mabel, who thought Geof might show interest in her, was making unusual noise in the kitchen.

Alice jumped up from the comfortable chair and went to the door to let her son know she was going home. Quick goodbyes were said and she promised to come again. This all happened so suddenly that only after her sister had gone was Grace able to go to the kitchen to see what all the noise was about.

The difference in the atmosphere forcibly hit her as she opened the kitchen door; she had never felt faint before but at that moment she could have fallen to the floor. Turning quickly Mable dropped the dish she was washing and unthinkingly began to laugh at the dismay on her mistress' face.

Grace felt somewhat relieved, she had not realised that she had hoped for an excuse to ask her maid to go. Why she had taken her on in the first place she did not know! She too could have laughed; however it was the right time to get rid of her, she had to protect Geof, who was a handsome boy and might be easily led.

After recovering her composure she entered the kitchen and quietly said, "You must pack your things and go; I will give you a month's wages in lieu of notice. I will also order a taxi to take you to the station."

Mabel was bewildered and blurted, "I don't know what happened!"

Grace looked at her sadly, saying, "I feel you let your emotions run away with you; I shall not put it in your reference."

Mabel was thankful but did not say so, she felt that somehow a trick had been played upon her. The atmosphere thick with her own desire was the reason. Her animosity building a strong amber colour was the cause. Her mistress had been glad she could see that, but she kept asking herself how had it all happened?

When the front door had shut upon her retreating maid Grace went up to Geof and seeing him so preoccupied went to her room to rest and to show thankfulness for the freedom she now felt. Silver and a lovely pink she could not see but could feel the anticipation of quietness as peace wrapped itself around her.
