Perchance to Dream
It is said that dreams and visions of the night are a link between heaven and earth. Yet there are many sincere seekers of the truth for whom sleep seems like a closed book. My brother is one such person, which is why when he told me of a dream he’d had, we both knew it must be especially significant.
Before I continue, let me suggest one reason why so many people remember nothing of their dreams. Often it is that their brain is fully occupied with the everyday things of the earth. Perhaps they are busy people who don’t realise how important it is to quieten the brain at times, even more so before going to sleep. And when waking in the morning, immediately their thoughts turn to the demands of the day ahead. Our beloved teacher Gladys recommended having a notepad at the side of the bed ready to jot down anything remembered, no matter how trivial. She went on to say that as simple as it sounds, this method can actually stimulate our dream recall. It has certainly paid off for me over more than 50 years!
Returning to my brother, whose deeply-held interest in Gladys’ teaching began with attending her classes alongside my father and me, many years ago now. Since retiring from work he has been kept physically and mentally busy with calls upon his time from many quarters. Then, out of the blue, he dreamed he was given an interview for a job. Being retired there is no question of him working again, so the meaning of the interview might be a mystery. It only makes sense when I tell you that my brother has longed to work on behalf of the Spirit in some capacity. The dream is therefore a confirmation that he is in line to take on a specific role. Although it wasn’t revealed if he got the job, my interpretation is that by keeping close to the values he currently holds dear, the job will be his.
People might be surprised to know that we have this double life — one in the earth, and a second one lived by the inner self in the planes of life above (or below) the level of earth when the matter body is asleep. It is this life of the inner self that becomes our main existence after passing. The so-called sleep of death is not actually sleep at all, but the continuance of a life good or not so good according to our true nature. (More upon this subject can be found on the Studies on Life website.)
The idea that one could be given a job during sleep is something I remember from when I first started learning with Gladys. Two students in the class had dreamed of being in a war; one was in the army, and the other was a battlefield courier. Gladys explained that people could volunteer to help in the conflict between good and evil, a war which is even now being waged in the planes of the Astral. I should add that we were told it wasn’t wise to consciously wish to play such a part, for we might be better placed elsewhere, perhaps going to school or serving in another way. We should therefore leave it to the soul, working through the inner self, to put ourselves forward for whatever suits our stage of progress.
There are of course many other jobs that can be done during sleep to benefit the light, including working in a hospital, teaching children, and not least the serving of food with love. But I will finish on a slightly amusing note by telling you of one job I was asked to do during sleep. After receiving the necessary training, I began work with a small group of companions — as a spy! For a time, my dreams were of various missions we were sent on, sometimes ending with nail-biting escapes. This was presumably to assist in the conflict I have already spoken of, between the light and the darkness — a battle for the hearts and minds of those who mean well but who go blindly through life (and that can include all of us at one time or another), prone to being depressed or ill, or in trouble of some kind.
For all of us wanting to see good triumph over evil should come first the desire to learn and to seek the light, and then all else will follow.
