Remembrance
Now it is November we are coming to the time of Remembrance, when tributes are given to those who died serving their country. Putting the needs of one’s country before the needs of the self, with the thought in mind of helping or protecting others, has for many been a first step towards enlarging the light of the Spirit. And as our teacher Gladys said, that all those who died wanting peace can join the forces of good in the ongoing conflict against evil, using the power of the mind instead of earthly weapons of destruction. This conflict, prophesied in the Bible and known as Armageddon, is a war which is raging even now in the planes near to and below the Earth.
One definition of evil is that of anything causing harm, or undermining the expression of goodness, especially when done deliberately or maliciously. Evil thrives upon feelings of hatred and covetousness, but even bad temper used to intimidate others falls into the same category. The outcome is an increase in darkness, both in the personal aura and in the atmosphere about us.
We who still live upon the earth can play our part in pushing back darkness by learning how to build up light. Light is a power that comes from being loving and kind whilst holding a peaceful mind. Disharmonious feelings are close to the earth and are easily taken into ourselves when not getting our own way. It requires strength of purpose to throw out anything that threatens our equanimity, without rising in reaction to what is said or done by other people. Light can then be used in surprising ways to help us through the difficulties that have to be faced.
So often have people pointed a finger at those who follow the Spirit, saying they have their head in the clouds. But proof of everything we learn comes through our day to day example. It will make the light around us so strong that anyone we meet who questions the inconsistencies of their own being will recognise it as something that could change the whole course of their life for the better.
It is within our power to give out blessing in this earth life. Going into someone’s home and saying sincerely, "Bless this house," will have a definite effect. Blessing a person without judging them will enlarge what they are themselves. Sincere and generous in mind, the blessing will give them added protection against harm. If harbouring ill will towards others it will turn back on them as unexpected hardship, but through it they can learn and so find happiness.
It might seem at this time in the world’s history that we are fighting against the odds. More than ever it relies upon those who are sincere to take up the challenge of life, not unlike those both past and present who have had to endure wartime conditions. The challenge today is to learn how to love despite all the obstacles encountered, endeavouring not to be frustrated or anxious – feelings which take away light from ourselves and from others. In learning the truth of love, we can find a oneness with our own soul and the strength to overcome fear.
